A Good Start Begins With This

I sensed I needed to win their trust but struggled to understand the culture.

One member, in particular, stood out to me as a de-facto leadership voice in that community. I began to realize that if I could win his confidence, I would gain an ally of significant influence. But he was the opposite of me in so many ways. He was a giant of a man with a big booming voice, a Cheshire smile, a larger-than-life personality, and seemingly boundless energy and vitality.

One Sunday, he began to razz me publically. It was all of a good-hearted nature. Typically I would have had difficulty keeping up, but this Sunday, I found myself trumping each of his comments with my own witty volleys. We went back and forth for a few moments until he conceded with a thunderous laugh, saying, “Pastor, you’re my kind of guy!”

Months later, after our relationship had turned into a deep, rich friendship, he admitted that he was initially skeptical about me. The exchange of good-natured barbs on that early Sunday had won him over.

I still marvel at the day when I discovered the power of ribbing-in-the-Spirit. What I could never have been ready for of my own volition, the Holy Spirit empowered me to do.

Over the years, as ministry work has taken on various forms, I’ve continually been reminded of the preeminence of God’s Spirit going before me, walking beside me, and working within me as I’ve taken on tasks larger than me.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins His teaching by giving great value to those who approach His work with emptiness and humility. Look at this first statement, and weigh out all of the ramifications:

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him...” (Matthew 5:3, NLT)

Before any healthy communication about church communications can begin, I start with the recognition that I need Jesus. I need all of Him. I need His wisdom. I need His wit. I need His power. The blessing of serving well begins with submission. It begins with a humble approach and a ready spirit.
